Fuji Speedway opened in January 1966 in the foothills of Mount Fuji. Originally planned as an American-style banked superspeedway, it was redesigned as a European-style road course by consultant Stirling Moss after designer Charles Moneypenny found the site unsuitable for high banking. The circuit hosted the Japanese motorcycle Grand Prix as the finale of the FIM Road Racing World Championship in 1966 and 1967, the first run on the full banked layout, the second on a shorter 4.3km configuration without the banking. The current twelve-turn layout, in use since 2005, retains one of motorsport's longest straights and first hosted a Formula One Japanese Grand Prix in 1976.
